Why Somatic Practices Are Essential in MBSR

MBSR cultivates awareness. Somatic practices determine how that awareness is embodied and integrated.

Nervous system regulation is not separate from mindfulness training—it is the mechanism through which mindfulness becomes stable, usable, and sustainable in real-world conditions.

Paired with MBSR, somatic practices:

  • support parasympathetic (vagal) activation during and after stress

  • help translate moment-to-moment awareness into physiological regulation

  • increase tolerance for internal sensations, including discomfort and emotional intensity

  • reinforce new response patterns through embodied repetition rather than cognition alone

  • build adaptive capacity without pushing the system into overwhelm

This integration addresses a common limitation of mindfulness training: insight without regulation. By directly engaging the body, participants are better able to remain present with experience rather than becoming dysregulated or avoidant.

The result is a more complete form of practice—one that not only observes stress, but actively reshapes the body’s response to it.
