Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in Pasadena

A Depth-Oriented Approach to Medically Supported Treatment

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) combines the medical administration of ketamine with structured psychotherapeutic support. When thoughtfully integrated, this model can create opportunities for emotional access, perspective shifts, and meaningful psychological change.

I offer ketamine-assisted psychotherapy through a collaborative care model in partnership with Journey Clinical, an independent medical provider.

This model ensures that medical and psychotherapeutic responsibilities remain clearly defined and professionally managed.

Why psychotherapy is essential in KAP

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is not simply medication treatment. The therapeutic process — preparation, support during sessions, and integration — is what allows insight to translate into lasting psychological change.

How the Collaborative Model Works

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is delivered through two coordinated roles:

Journey Clinical’s Medical Team Is Responsible For:

• Comprehensive medical evaluation
• Determination of treatment eligibility
• Development of dosing and treatment protocols
• Prescribing ketamine
• Ongoing medical oversight

Medical decisions, prescriptions, and dosing protocols are managed exclusively by Journey Clinical’s licensed medical providers.

My Role as the Psychotherapist

As your treating psychologist, I provide the psychotherapy component of KAP, including:

• Preparation sessions
• Therapeutic support during dosing sessions
• Integration-focused psychotherapy
• Ongoing depth-oriented treatment

Clients self-administer medication in accordance with medical guidance provided by Journey Clinical.

This structure allows psychotherapy and medical care to operate in coordinated but distinct domains.

What Makes Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Different?

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is not simply medication treatment.

The psychotherapy component is essential. Preparation and integration often determine whether insights translate into sustainable psychological change.

KAP may allow temporary reduction of defensive patterns, increased emotional access, or shifts in perspective. Therapy helps organize, process, and integrate what emerges.

The focus remains on:

• Psychological meaning-making
• Emotional processing
• Relational patterns
• Long-term change

Ketamine is not a replacement for therapy; it is used within therapy.

Who May Benefit from KAP

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy may be appropriate for individuals experiencing:

• Depression that has not responded to traditional approaches
• Trauma-related symptoms
• Persistent anxiety patterns
• Existential distress
• Rigid self-critical or relational patterns

A comprehensive medical evaluation determines eligibility.

KAP is not appropriate for everyone, and readiness is assessed carefully within the collaborative model.

Who May Not be a Fit for KAP

  • individuals seeking medication without psychotherapy

  • those looking for rapid or purely experiential solutions

  • individuals unwilling to engage in ongoing therapy.

Preparation

Preparation sessions focus on:

• Clarifying intentions
• Identifying therapeutic themes
• Strengthening emotional regulation skills
• Developing safety and grounding strategies
• Establishing expectations

Preparation supports psychological stability and increases the likelihood of meaningful integration.

The Dosing Session

During dosing sessions:

• Clients self-administer medication as prescribed
• I provide therapeutic support
• The focus remains on containment, safety, and psychological processing

The goal is not to chase peak experiences but to allow meaningful material to emerge within a supportive structure.

Integration

Integration sessions focus on:

• Making meaning of the experience
• Organizing emotional material
• Translating insight into daily life
• Strengthening new patterns of thought and behavior

Integration is often where lasting change occurs.
